"The cost of World War II was 375 billion dollars. With this amount of money one could buy a splendid house and furnishings for every family of Canada, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, France and the United States, and still have enough money left over to give each family a present of 200,000 dollars.

To each city of 200,000 or more inhabitants, there could have been a donation of 10 million dollars for librarys, 10 million for schools and the same to build hospitals.

Alternatively, we could have given a gift of 400,000 to every family on earth."

George Ohsawa 1950

Superfically, the monetary cost is calculable. The human cost, the family members, the loss, the suffering, incalculable.

The most overlooked aspect of the great war, regardless of which faction took which action during the fighting: all bombs, all landmines and nearly all weapons poisoned the land upon which we are expected to live, destroyed the crops and interfered with the food chain from which we are expected to eat, and polluted the air from which we all breathe.

The whole earth felt itself being abused.
